Amtrak service halted after fire near New York train tracks

NEW YORK (AP) — Amtrak service in parts of the Northeast was interrupted or delayed Tuesday after a fire broke out near a train line in New York.

Amtrak said initial reports indicated that a brush fire originating from a transformer at an Amtrak substation caused power losses for trains in the area, affecting travel.

Service was suspended for the day between New York Penn Station and New Haven, Connecticut. There were also delays between New York and Washington and between Boston and New Haven.

A spokesman for the Con Edison power company said the fire broke out along the train tracks in the Bronx around 2:30 p.m., while Amtrak employees were working on a high-voltage power cable and a transformer. The fire spread to a nearby warehouse and the parking lot of a Con Edison substation, damaging three cars, utility spokesman Philip O’Brien said.

Trains approaching Penn Station in Manhattan were moved out of the area at reduced speed using diesel engines.

There was no estimate of when normal operations would resume.

Most of the East Coast has seen little precipitation since September, and dozens of forest fires are burning throughout the region. Experts say the fires will persist until significant precipitation or frost occurs.
