President-elect of the United States Donald Trump is expected to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday, marking Trump’s first return to the Oval Office since his 2020 election loss to Biden. It will also be his first visit since the end of his presidency amid allegations of electoral fraud. Trump’s victory in the seven key states, as well as securing 312 electoral votes for Kamala Harris‘s 226, ensured his return to the presidency.

This meeting represents a return to two key traditions: a peaceful transfer of power and the outgoing president’s attendance at the incoming president’s inauguration.

Trump, who refused to accept his 2020 election defeat to Biden, saw his refusal to accept the results culminate in the violent January 6 riots organized by his supporters at the US Capitol in 2021.

Falsely claiming election fraud, Trump also refused to attend Biden’s inauguration and failed to facilitate a smooth transition of power.

However, in 2024, after Trump’s victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala HarrisBiden personally invited Trump to the White House, congratulating him on his victory in a November 6 phone call.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stressed that Biden’s invitation reflects his commitment to democratic norms.

“He believes in standards,” Jean-Pierre said, ABC News reported. “The American people deserve this. They deserve a peaceful transfer of power. They deserve a smooth transition.”

Before meeting with Biden, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Trump should go to Capitol Hill to meet with House Republicans. Johnson described the upcoming meetings as important for the Republican conference.

Trump and Biden are scheduled to meet in the Oval Office at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
