Dak Prescott vs. Brock Purdy contracts: Explaining the huge salary gap between Cowboys and 49ers QBs

The Cowboys and 49ers are set to once again compete in a huge matchup on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 8. The matchup marks the fourth time they have played in the regular season or playoffs since the start of 2022.

These two teams have constructed their rosters in different ways, but nothing shows the contrast more than the contracts of each team’s quarterbacks.

Dallas made Dak Prescott the highest paid player in the league in average annual value just before the start of the season, with both sides agreeing to a four-year, $240 million contract extension. Purdy, meanwhile, is still playing out his rookie contract as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, which has made him one of the lowest-paid regulars in the entire league.

How do the quarterback contracts compare? Sporting News breaks them down.

Dak Prescott contract

Despite signing the extension, Prescott is currently in the final year of his previous contract which paid him $160 million over four seasons starting in 2021. These numbers are still gaudy, a cap hit of $43.4 million with a dead cap of $195.27 million, but they’re not. Those aren’t exactly the numbers for next year, when Prescott will be just under $90 million against the cap.

Prescott’s new extension runs through the 2028 season, and his cap hit will be at least $62 million for each of the four seasons between now and then.

Contract with Brock Purdy

Purdy, meanwhile, will be in the final year of his rookie contract next year before he can cash in on it. Since San Francisco made the NFC Championship Game in Purdy’s first season as a starter, the team will have benefited from an inexpensive contract. starting quarterback for four straight seasons.

Purdy’s entire contract is a four-year, $3.7 million deal that he signed after the 49ers drafted him in 2022. While Prescott is the highest-paid player in the league with 60 million dollars per year, Purdy is ranked No. 84 among quarterbacks behind the likes of Skyler Thompson and Jake Browning. Only Tyson Bagent, Sam Ehlinger and Tommy DeVito make less money than Purdy among quarterbacks, by Sportrac.
