Illegal Chinese mobile jammers found in Delhi market, shop owner arrested

The devices can disrupt mobile signals up to 50 meters away.

Delhi:

Two illegal Chinese jammers were found at a shop in Delhi’s Palika Bazaar on Saturday, posing a security threat and violating the Centre’s guidelines prohibiting its use or sale by unauthorized persons. Police arrested the store owner, identified as Ravi Mathur, as he did not have a license or documents to sell the devices.

As per the Centre’s rules, Chinese jammers can only be used by authorized government and defense officials with specific license and documentation.

According to Mathur, he bought the jammers from Lajpat Rai market in Delhi for Rs 25,000 and aimed to sell them at a higher price.

The devices – which can disrupt mobile signals up to 50 meters away – had jammed all cellular activity nearby, including incoming and outgoing calls and text messages. The jammers forced the disconnection of all calls already in progress and the phones displayed a “no network” sign.

In the event of a crime, the police would not be able to trace what communication had taken place on site because of the jammers.

The Delhi Police informed the telecom department about the incident, officials said.

They are also researching other markets in the national capital, they added.
