Man charged with murder after death in Wolverhampton

Alex Turner will appear at Walsall Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, two days after he was arrested and charged with murder following the death of a man in Whitmore Reans in Wolverhampton Friday.

Nicholas Cope was found in cardiac arrest on Newhampton Road East at around 6pm and died shortly afterwards, with an investigation commencing shortly afterwards.

Officers from the St Peters and Park Neighborhood Team made the arrest on Tuesday morning and Turner, 31, was taken into custody where he currently remains.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We have charged a 31-year-old man with murder following the death of a man in Whitmore Reans on Friday evening.

“Nicholas Cope, aged 48, sadly died after being found in cardiac arrest in Newhampton Road East at around 6pm.

“Investigators have been working to establish exactly what happened, and officers from our St Peters and Park neighborhood team made an arrest early on Tuesday morning.

“Today Alex Turner was charged with murder. He remains in custody ahead of a hearing at Walsall Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.”

Detective Inspector Nigel Box, who is leading the investigation, said: “While this is a significant step forward in our investigations, we continue to investigate the full circumstances of this tragic incident.

“We know that Newhampton Road East is a busy road, and we are asking any drivers who were in the area around 6pm on Friday to take a look at their dashcam as they may have footage which would assist the investigation.

“If you have any images or other information which you think could assist the investigation, please contact investigators on 101 or via live chat, quoting log 4215 of November 8.”
