Jubo Dal leader expelled for threatening to secure KEPZ tender

A Jubo Dal leader from Chattogram has been expelled following allegations that he threatened a foreign company to secure a tender in the Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone (KEPZ).

Abdul Karim, Religious Affairs Secretary of Chattogram South District Jubo Dal, is accused of uttering death threats and threatening to suspend the operations of American and Efird Bangladesh Limited.

In a press release issued last night, Jubo Dal central secretary Nurul Islam Sohel said Karim had been expelled from all ranks of the party, including primary members.

He said Jubo Dal would not take responsibility for the misconduct of expelled members, ordering party members to avoid organizational contact with Karim.

However, Abdul Karim denied the allegations, saying he and BNP leader Elias Kanchan had visited the company only to submit applications on behalf of party members. He claims his political rivals fabricated these accusations to weaken them.

Earlier on October 25, BNP Anwara upazila co-convener Elias Kanchan was also expelled from the party following the same incident.

The dispute began on October 21 when American and Efird filed a general diary (GD) at the Karnaphuli police station, alleging harassment and threats by Karim and Kanchan.

Shegufta Goni, deputy general manager of human resources at the company, claimed in the GD that the accused repeatedly pressured him for a tender decision, threatening retaliation if the tender tenders were not awarded by November.

On October 20, the director said he had received threatening telephone calls, and the next day the accused allegedly entered the factory, insulted him and his colleagues and threatened to close the factory.
