A detective with the Rockville Center Police Department has been charged with a hate crime, according to police.

Police said John Murphy, 40, made racial slurs toward a black man who was working last week at the corner of Sylvan Court and Weeks Avenue in Manorville.

Police say the victim was approached by Murphy, who lives in the area. Murphy identified himself as an officer and refused to look at the worker’s identifying information, according to police.

He is also accused of kicking the man’s SUV, ripping out a light and throwing a light at him.
