Loose Moose destroys restored BMW 850i while stuck in Swedish garage

Insurance Claims Filed after people run into wild animals are common and concerning, but the same cannot be said for claims submitted after a an animal destroys your car while it is parked. This is exactly what happened at a BMW specialist in Sweden this weekend when a moose got stuck into a garage and trampled three classic BMWs.

One of Earth’s last megafauna found its way into a garage owned by BMW and Mini specialist Schmiedmann in Sweden this weekend. Company director Viktor Örtegren was at Schmiedmann’s premises on the outskirts of Gothenburg to store his speedboat for the winter. After towing the boat in, he heard a commotion and looked around the hull to see that a moose had entered directly into the establishment.

Obviously, the moose was just as shocked as Örtegren was to see it and reportedly jumped over three cars that were stored in the garage, including a recently restored BMW 850i. The moose then stood up on its hind legs and slammed its front hooves on the freshly painted hood of the classic BMW, a Schmiedmann spokesperson explained.

Video of the ordeal has since been shared on social media and it is wild. The moose looks huge compared to the cars he walks everywhere, including the 850, a 3 series E36 and a second classic E31 850i. Two cars belonged to Schmiedmann customers while the third was an employee’s vehicle. A statement shared by the company added:

When Viktor contacted the owner of the most damaged BMW 850i and said: “I’m terribly sorry – but a big moose came by and crushed your BMW 850 to pieces” – the customer initially thought he It was a prank or a joke. Although he’s sad to see all the damage to the cars, Viktor is just relieved that no one – including the moose – was hurt in the incident. At first, Viktor was afraid that the stressed animal would see him and attack him, so he hid behind the boat.

Fortunately, the moose did not attack and instead ran out of the garage as soon as it could. The animal crossed a nearby highway and left his $20,000 trail of destruction far behind him.

Damage caused by large animals like moose is a serious problem in Scandinavia, so much so that researchers in the region recently developed a moose-shaped crash test dummy this earned them an IG Nobel Prize.
