The postponement of the trial prolongs the pain of the family of Katlyn Lyon who are still seeking justice

A mother is forced to wait for justice again after another delay in the trial of a man accused of murdering her daughter.

Trenton Frye was supposed to go on trial today in Bedford County for the strangulation death of his girlfriend Katlyn Lyon two years ago, but the defense moved forward with the trial. This is the 5th continuation.

“Nothing is going to fix my broken heart, but it’s a start,” said Crystal Sale, Katlyn Lyon’s mother.

Even though time has passed, Sale said his fight for his daughter, Katlyn, has not diminished.

I asked recently what it was like before the trial.

“It was terrible,” she said. “The anxiety went through the roof.”

Before this trial, I asked her what she was thinking.

“The first, what will I see during the trial, things that I will not be able to ignore,” she replied. “She’s on my mind, it’s like have you ever seen the movie Groundhog Day? She’s on my mind every day.”

Trenton Frye is charged with first degree murder. Investigators said he strangled Katlyn Lyon to death in 2022 at her home in Forest.

“The pain and terror she endured haunts me,” she said.

Sale said her daughter was a beautiful, fun and intelligent woman. She left behind a family who loved her and a young daughter. Sale said Katlyn’s daughter Melanie “looks so much like her mom.”

Mélanie was only 4 years old when she lost her mother. She is 6 years old now.

“She talks about herself and she remembers her,” Sale said. “I hope she never forgets. You know she’s so young.”

Sale made an effort to keep Katlyn’s memory alive. She talks about herself every chance she gets. She said their family has been through some tough times in recent years, but they are trying to be patient.

“We want justice and it doesn’t matter how long it takes,” she said.

The prosecution and defense are currently working to set a new trial date. Sale said they expect the trial to take place within a few months.
