Why New York won’t allow betting on the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul boxing match

New Yorkers wanting to bet on Iron Mike’s return to the ring will have to get creative.

The Empire State is one of the few states to ban betting on Friday’s scheduled fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul Netflix at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Seven of the 38 states that have legalized gambling have banned betting on combat, by ESPN.

“The New York State Gaming Commission has the discretion to determine whether specific sporting events are eligible for wagering. Betting on this fight is not permitted in the State of New York. Although the fight was sanctioned as a professional fight by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (which regulates combat sports in Texas), the fight is subject to non-traditional rules, including rounds two-minute rounds and 14-ounce gloves rather than the standard three-minute rounds and 10-ounce gloves,” the New York State Gaming Commission said in a statement, via communications director Brad Maione .

“Boxing matches approved for betting in New York must follow unified rules established by the Association of Boxing and Combat Sports Commissions, which require three-minute rounds and 10-ounce gloves.”

Tyson’s first match in 19 years sparks a lot of interest when he takes on the YouTuber turned boxer, with BetMGM told The Post in July he expected the fight to be the most sought-after fight in its history.

Despite this interest, some states prefer to stay away due to some deviations from standard operating procedures for boxing matches.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations sanctioned this as an official heavyweight bout in April, with the fight to consist of eight two-minute rounds and the boxers using 14-ounce gloves.

Championship boxing matches typically consist of 12 rounds, each lasting three minutes, while heavyweight bouts in Texas are given gloves 10 times, according to regulations.

Other states not allowing any action echoed similar sentiments to New York.

A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board told USA Today that they felt this fight was “more of an exhibition” and a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Revenue told the outlet that this fight “does not meet the minimum industry requirements in the state.”

This fight isn’t the only area where New York is restrictive when it comes to betting.

Sports bettors cannot bet on certain events, including sports draftsas well as college games and props involving New York-based teams, like St. John’s basketball.

For those looking to venture outside of New York to bet, Paul is a -210 favorite and Tyson has +170 odds as an underdog, according to BetMGM.

Paul is -190 on the three-way moneyline, with Tyson at +188 and tied at +900.

Tyson last fought in a sanctioned match in 2005 and last entered the ring in 2020 for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr.

This fight was originally scheduled for July but had to be postponed after Tyson suffered a medical emergency. in which he vomited blood.
