Who did Notre Dame men’s basketball recruit to its national Top 10 class?

SOUTH BEND – It didn’t take long.

Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry realized shortly after arriving from Penn State in March 2022 that it would take some serious recruiting work to rebuild a roster and program that needed rebuilding.

Stocking up on transfers was not going to be an option.

Shrewsberry rolled up his recruiting sleeves and got to work. He recruited Indiana. He recruited nationally. He recruited players who he believed could be a good fit for how his program operated and what the university required of its “student-athletes.”

As of Wednesday, Notre Dame’s four-man recruiting class was deemed a consensus Top 10 class. It was ranked No. 4 by 247Sports, No. 5 by both ESPN and Rivals.com and No. 6 by on3. It is considered the highest rated Irish recruiting class “of the modern era”.

In other words, for a long time.

Here’s a look at the four players who are now part of the Notre Dame men’s basketball puzzle. They will join the program in June 2025 for the start of summer school and their first seasons.

Tommy Ahneman

Dimensions: 6 feet 10 inches, 235 pounds.

Position: Center.

Hometown: West Fargo, North Dakota.

High school: Cretin-Durham Hall (St. Paul, Minnesota).

In junior: Averaged 20.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.9 assists.

AAU Affiliation: Howard Pulley Hoops (Nike EYBL).

Official visit: Weekend of September 27.

Engagement announcement: Monday September 30.

National rankings: Unrated by ESPN; 3 stars and 167th nationally by on3; 3 stars and not rated by Rivals.com; 4 stars and 109th by 247Sports.

Main recruiter: Associate head coach Kyle Getter.

Noting: Ahneman helped Sheyenne (ND) High School win the Class 2A state championship with 28 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks in the title game. He and his family have since moved to the Minneapolis area, where he will play his senior season.

Rotation projection 2025: Replacing future senior Kebba Njie and future sophomore Garrett Sundra.

Kyle Getter says: “He’s one of those post players who comes back. Soft touch. Beautiful hands. He moves well. He adapts really well to our style of play.

Micah Shrewsberry says: “Tommy is a center that has skills and should immediately provide a physical presence to this program and be someone you can throw the ball to in the post and expect a bucket.”

Ryder Frost

Dimensions: 6-6, 205.

Position: Small forward/shooting guard.

Hometown: Beverly, Mass.

High school: Phillips Exeter (NH) Academy.

In junior: Averaged 21.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

AAU Affiliation: Middlesex (Massachusetts) Magic (Under Armor).

Official visit: Weekend of September 6.

Engagement announcement: Friday September 27.

National rankings: 4 stars and 97th overall by ESPN; 4 stars and 81st by on3; 4 stars and 96th by Rivals.com; 4 stars and 100th by 247Sports.

Main recruiter: Assistant coach Mike Farrelly.

Noting: Frost’s maternal grandfather is former Vermont men’s basketball coach Tom Brennan.

Rotation projection 2025: Backup shooting guard for future junior Braeden Shrewsberry and future sophomore Cole Certa.

Mike Farrelly says: “If he was just a guy that could stand in the corner and make shots and not do much else, those guys don’t really suit us for what we want to do and how we want to play He is a hard worker who will adapt well.

Micah Shrewsberry says: “Ryder is a capable ball handler and underrated athlete whose size and strength should give him positional versatility.”

Jalen Haralson

Dimensions: 6-7, 210.

Position: Small front/wing protection.

Hometown: Fishermen, Indiana.

High school: La Lumière School (Ind.).

In junior: Averaged 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in his first season at La Lumière after transferring from Fishers High School.

AAU Affiliation: Indy Heat (Nike EYBL).

Official visit: Weekend of September 6.

Engagement announcement: Wednesday September 25.

National rankings: 5 stars and 10th overall by ESPN; 5 stars and 13th by on3; 4 stars and 17th by Rivals.com; 5 stars and 14th by 247Sports.

Main recruiter: Assistant coach Ryan Owens.

Noting: Haralson is the first Top 10 five-star prospect to sign with Notre Dame since forward LaPhonso Ellis in 1988.

Rotation projection 2025: He starts at wing guard from the minute he steps on campus.

Ryan Owens says: “One of the best things about his game is how he makes everyone around him better. People like to play with him. He has a certain joy about himself, on and off the field.

Micah Shrewsberry says: “I wanted to make it a basketball decision. I wanted to talk to him about basketball. He could see a clear adjustment that fit his game. Like, (he) can rebound and push it because I could show him clips of Tae Davis doing it. There was clear, visual evidence that (his) game matched the way they coach.

Brady Koehler

Dimensions: 6-9, 180.

Position: Power forward.

Hometown: Indianapolis.

High school: Cathedral.

In junior: Averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

AAU Affiliation: Indy Heat (Nike EYBL).

Official visit: Weekend of September 6.

Engagement announcement: Monday September 23.

National rankings: 4 stars, 98th overall by ESPN; 4 stars and 85th by on3; 4 stars and 111th by Rivals.com; 4 stars and 117th by 247Sports.

Main recruiter: Assistant coach Ryan Owens.

Noting: Koehler went from a 6-foot guard in high school to his current size as a 6-9 power forward with a 7-foot-2 1/2 wingspan. He is the first Cathedral Kid to commit to play for former Cathedral Kid Micah Shrewsberry.

Rotation projection 2025: Back up small forward for future senior Tae Davis and future graduate student JR Konieczny.

Ryan Owens says: “When you think about Brady Koehler, he’s the definition of upside. It’s producing now, but it still has so much upside. He can make all the reads that Coach Shrewsberry likes in his guys.

Micah Shrewsberry says: “Cathedral’s second best left-handed (player) here at Notre Dame. We all know who knows #1.
