  • Tesla is recalling the Cybertruck for the sixth time this year because some models may unexpectedly lose engine power.
  • The problem is caused by a faulty transmission shifter that affects 2,431 units of the 2024 model year pickup truck.
  • Repairs are expected to begin early next month and technicians will replace the speed controller free of charge.

Another day, another Tesla Cybertruck remember because the electric pickup has an inverter problem which could cause loss of drive power. The issue affects 2,431 model year 2024 Cybertrucks and cannot be fixed by an over-the-air update.

The safety recall report doesn’t go into detail, but says the affected trucks are equipped with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) in the drive inverter. These inverters can experience a “fault” that can cause them to stop producing torque.

The government said the loss of propulsion occurs without warning, so drivers could be in for an unpleasant surprise. However, in the event of a problem, drivers will be warned and asked to pull over to the side of the road.

Tesla is identified as the component manufacturer and the company opened an investigation after receiving a customer complaint on July 31. Towards the end of October, the automaker was able to identify an “increased failure rate” for inverters equipped with MOSFET components. A week later, the company decided to issue a recall.

The company is aware of at least five possible incidents, but the problem has not caused any known injuries, deaths or collisions. This is good news and Tesla will start replacing inverters around December 9. However, notifications to landlords are not expected to be sent until January next year.

The latest recall is the sixth for the Cybertruck and follows an over-the-air update to address a slow rearview camera display. Other recalls included the accelerator pedal, windshield wiper motor and a piece of trim that could fall.
