Philippines’ Duterte says ready to take on ICC in The Hague over drug war – ‘hurry up’

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte surprised lawmakers by declaring that he would appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague during questioning in the House of Representatives about his administration’s war on drugs.

Appearing visibly agitated amid more than 11 hours of questioning on Wednesday, Duterte said in Filipino: “I will go to the ICC myself. I’m going to get investigated there. He also urged lawmakers to “give me money” to buy a plane ticket to the court’s headquarters in The Hague.

Duterte’s response was a reversal of his long-standing rejection of foreign interference in his politics.

The 79-year-old former leader is the subject of separate investigations in the House and Senate related to crimes committed during the war on drugs during his tenure, which human rights activists say led to extrajudicial executions of thousands of people. He is also under investigation by the ICC for crimes against humanity linked to the killings.

Hours after Duterte’s surprise statement, Lucas Bersamin, executive secretary to the president Ferdinand Marcos Jr.said: “If the former president wishes to submit to the jurisdiction of the ICC, the government will not object or obstruct the realization of his desire. »

Bersamin, a retired deputy chief justice of the Supreme Court, added that if the ICC were to involve Interpol and issue a red notice, Philippine authorities would be “required to extend full cooperation” within established protocols.
