Squamish RCMP warn of vigilantism amid online concerns

Police in Squamish, British Columbia, have issued a warning against vigilante actions due to security concerns they say are circulating on social media.

The Sea to Sky RCMP release says police want to “reassure” residents in the community about 60 kilometers north of Vancouver that “there is currently no threat to public safety.” .

The Mounties’ statement did not provide details, but there have been a multitude of posts and comments on social media reporting allegations of stalking and attempted kidnapping of women by one or more unidentified men. identified in Squamish.

Police said officers “thoroughly assessed the situation” and determined there was no immediate danger to residents.

The release thanks community members for their dedication to ensuring Squamish is a safe and welcoming place, but says engaging in “vigilance” puts people at risk and has resulted in the targeting of innocent people.

He adds that vigilantism can also inadvertently interfere with ongoing investigations, potentially endangering people’s safety and compromising the judicial process.

“While some of our work may not be immediately visible, we are continually active in our efforts to protect the community,” said Staff Sgt. Gareth Bradley declares this in the press release published on Wednesday.

“This includes patrolling neighborhoods, monitoring investigations, working with community partners and resolving emerging issues. Some investigations require time and discretion to effectively collect evidence.”
