Danielson has two assists against the IceHogs; Dilbone is part of the U18 team

First-round draft picks Nate Danielson and Sebastian Cossa helped the Grand Rapids Griffins earn a 5-2 victory over the Rockford IceHogs in the 23rd annual high school game Wednesday afternoon at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Danielson, the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, had two assists and now has a goal and five assists for six points in 13 games with the Griffins. Teammate Austin Watson, an NHL veteran from Ann Arbor, also scored a goal Wednesday. Cossa improved to 6-3-1 with a 28-save performance.

“Danny works extremely hard and has a tremendous amount of skill,” Watson told griffinshockey.com. “He’s a highly touted draft pick, but he’s doing a lot of little things right. He’s getting used to the professional game. It’s a little heavier, a little harder and a little faster, but he has the ability to play in this game.

“As the year went on, he became more comfortable with the puck. You saw by his play on the power play, he found that he had time to make a few plays than everyone else on the ice can’t do. He’s gaining confidence and reaping the benefits of playing with an offensively gifted player.”

Former Red Wing Andreas Athanasiou scored two goals and former Michigan State defenseman Artyom Levshunov had an assist for the IceHogs.

The Griffins (6-3-1) are off to the third-fastest start in franchise history with 19 points in 13 games and the 25 goals allowed are the fewest allowed in Grand Rapids history.

Dilbone named to U.S. U18 team

Natalia Dilbone of South Lyon was among 25 players selected for Team USA at the U18 Women’s World Championships in Vantaa, Finland, Jan. 4-12, 2025.

Dilbone, a 17-year-old goaltender in the Little Caesars women’s hockey program, was one of eight returning players to win gold at the world championships last year.

Other guards on the roster are: Morgan Stickney (Shattuck-St. Mary’s) of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Finley Engfer (Apple Valley High School) of Savage, Minn.

The United States played in all 16 gold medal games with nine gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze medal.

Wednesday’s NHL games

Toronto 4, (at) Washington 3 (OT): Mitch Marner equalized in the final minute of the third period, John Tavares scored the game-winner in overtime and the Maple Leafs rallied from a two-goal deficit.

William Nylander sparked the comeback with his goal with 4:09 left and set up Marner’s power play goal at 6-on-4 with 47.8 seconds left in regulation with goaltender Joseph Woll pulled for an attacker extra and Washington’s Nic Dowd in the penalty area. Nylander’s heroics came 24 hours after his turnaround in the first shift put the Leafs on course for a botched shutout loss at home to Ottawa.

The Capitals led 3-1 thanks to goals from Taylor Raddysh, Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas before a Tom Wilson turnover ended in a Nylander victory over Logan Thompson. Dowd’s penalty became one mistake too many and Washington lost for only the fifth time in 15 games this season.

Woll stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced to help Toronto rebound. Thompson made 31 saves and lost for the first time since Washington acquired him from Vegas last summer.

Sabers’ Samuelsson out indefinitely

Buffalo Sabers defenseman Mattias Samuelsson will be out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, coach Lindy Ruff announced Wednesday.

Ruff described the severity of the injury as “pretty bad.” He did not specify what it was, but said Samuelsson was not expected to need surgery.

Samuelsson was injured during a 7-5 loss to Montreal on Monday when a Canadiens player rolled on his leg. It was Samuelsson’s first game back after missing three due to a healthy scratch in Ruff’s attempt to shake up his roster.

Ruff cited leading scorer Tage Thompson and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen as daily, with both getting an opportunity to play Thursday, when Buffalo hosts the St. Louis Blues. Thompson also did not return to the game Monday after suffering a lower-body injury.

Luukkonen started against Montreal despite what Ruff called an illness, and he was pulled after allowing four goals on 18 shots in two periods.

By placing Samuelsson on injured reserve, the Sabers filled out the roster by claiming goaltender James Reimer a day after he was placed on waivers by Anaheim. The 15th-year player returns to Buffalo after losing him to a waiver claim from Anaheim on Oct. 7. Reimer allowed nine goals while losing two starts with the Ducks.
