Family of 77-year-old man urges Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office to improve training after deadly shooting

GUADALUPE COUNTY, Texas – A Guadalupe County family is calling on the sheriff’s department to improve its training procedures after a deputy fatally shot a 77-year-old man in August.

Kenneth Grimm’s family held a news conference Wednesday with civil rights attorney Randall Kallinen.

Grimm was fatally shot on August 27 on Nogal Streetlocated in the gated community of Las Brisas, off State Highway 46.

In a news release, the family said Grimm suffered from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases as well as dementia. His family members said he was “slow and very thin.”

On Aug. 27, the news release said Grimm, a retired U.S. Navy veteran and former Texas Lutheran University employee, was at a relative’s house and had become agitated because of a cut on his arm.

The family said they called 9-1-1 and a Guadalupe County sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene. When the unidentified deputy arrived, Grimm’s family members said they informed the deputy of Grimm’s condition.

According to the family, Grimm posed no threat to the family. However, a few minutes later, the GCSO deputy shot Grimm.

Kallinen said the GCSO deputy did not have a Taser at the time of the shooting.

“If he had a Taser, like the Seguin police have Tasers, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department has Tasers, like most Texas law enforcement has Tasers, he would be alive today ‘today,’ Kallinen said at Wednesday’s press conference.

Kallinen said the family contacted GCSO so they could view the deputy’s body camera footage. So far, Kallinen said the sheriff’s office has refused.

The Guadalupe County Prosecutor’s Office has not contacted Grimm’s family about any grand jury proceedings, Kallinen said.
