You know when you hear a story that’s literally impossible to believe until you remember that the person involved is a legend and legendary things always seem to happen to legends? Yes, this story about Hockey Hall of Famer Ray Bourque, a living legend, is one of those stories.

The story comes from former NHL Spittin’ Chiclets podcast host Ryan Whitney, who was discussing recent Hockey Hall of Fame inductees Jeremy Roenick and Pavel Datsyuk with co-host Paul Bissonnette and special guest Keith Yandle. While talking about how special it must be to get the green light from the HOF, Whitney recalled a story Bourque told him on the golf course about the day he got “the call.” .

“I was playing golf with him (Bourque) recently at Salem Country Club and there’s a great hole there that’s really tricky,” Whitney said. “It’s the 13th hole at Salem. Tight, shorter, crazy green. And he says ‘that’s the hole I got the Hall of Fame call for.'”

Already an interesting story, right? HOF call. Golf course. Things of this nature.

“I’m pretty sure,” Whitney continued, “I don’t think it was a birdie, I think he made his second shot for an eagle right after he got the call.”

Bissonnette, reacting like the rest of us, responded with a “OH my God, you’re kidding me.”

“No,” Whitney said. “He told me. And the fact that I don’t remember if it was an eagle or a birdie, but I think it was a damn eagle. I think he made his shot ‘Come right after I got the call he got into the Hall of Fame. He said “this is my favorite hole” and then he told me why it was so much fun to play with him.

Honestly, we should all assume/believe it was a holey eagle. Let the legend grow, as they say.
