Alyssa Farah Griffin recalled how former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) presented Donald Trump with a crazy, unfounded conspiracy theory while I was in the Oval Office about MSNBC Joe Scarborough kill an employee.

During Trump’s first term, Griffin served in the White House as director of strategic communications and assistant to the president. On Wednesday, Trump announced he planned to nominate the former Florida lawmaker as attorney general.

Griffin reacted to the news by reminiscing during a Thursday broadcast of The view about how Gaetz presented Trump with a conspiracy theory in the Oval Office. She claimed Gaetz told Trump about a widely debunked conspiracy theory about how Scarborough killed one of his employees.

I don’t know Matt Gaetz personally. My one experience with him came to mind when this was announced and I was still standing in the outer Oval Room outside the Oval Office with Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan, and Matt Gaetz was holding a file. He’s about to meet with then-President Trump. And I said: What’s in this file? He shows me these conspiracy theories in print that Morning Joe’s Joe Scarborough and former members of Congress murdered his staffer. And I said, please don’t show this to the President of the United States. Then a few days followed where Donald Trump tweeted malicious false allegations about Joe Scarborough and the family of the deceased woman. And there was no foul play. It was a tragedy, she begged Twitter and the White House to take it down.

So this is a testament to his character, his integrity and his judgment. But there is some hope here. Donald Trump absolutely has the constitutional right to appoint his cabinet members, and the Senate has the right to advise and give consent. And they must examine the qualifications, credentials and character of these candidates. And Matt Gaetz is a widely hated person, even by his Republican colleagues.
