Potential for using solar energy under study in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Solar energy and its potential use in Lexington are under active investigation, Mayor Linda Gorton said Thursday.

Currently, an internal group is also studying how solar energy is used in the city. At the top of the priority list is the installation of a solar farm on the Haley Pike Landfill, a more than 600-acre property. The idea is “promising,” Gorton said.

“If we see solar power working on our landfill, it would be a big step forward for sustainable energy in Lexington without loss of prime agricultural land,” she said. “Cities across the country have done this, and we think it’s a responsible step.” way to take the lead on this issue.

According to a press release, use of the landfill requires approval from state agencies.

However, “using the landfill site for solar energy is a much better choice than taking existing farmland out of production for a solar farm, a plan currently being considered by the Kentucky Public Service Commission,” the statement says. press release.

The city is seeking SolSmart accreditation, a program that aims to boost the use of solar energy and establishes designations for cities.

“As cities compete for economic development opportunities, programs like this are essential to assess the progress we have already made and provide guidance on the next steps to take. Sustainable energy options are important to the health of our residents and increasingly important to attracting businesses and growing our economy,” Gorton said.

Two solar programs are currently underway in Lexington.
