Greek fans hit England players with lasers during Nations League match

Referee Daniel Siebert booked Bellingham amid a wave of yellow cards, with the former Borussia Dortmund player immediately targeted by fans.

Home fans also booed Bellingham after his first foul, although the 3,500 traveling England fans chanted “Juuuude” when he was on the ball, which was interpreted by some as taunts.

Bellingham was England’s standout player early on, helping to set up the goal and also surpassing himself before being denied by a last-ditch tackle.

“Jude Bellingham looks like he’s enjoying this match. He runs everywhere to find free space,” said former England full-back Lee Dixon as a pundit on ITV Sport.

Caretaker manager Lee Carsley had made reference to the hostile atmosphere his players would face and that his younger players would benefit from the experience in a 70,000 capacity stadium which was a sell-out. “We have some players that this will be valuable experience for and we hope to develop them,” Carsley said.

Conor Gallagher and Jordan Pickford were also booked by Siebert in the first half in the Greek capital and, like Bellingham, walked a disciplinary tightrope afterwards.
