‘Incapable minister’: Aditya Thackeray targets Ashwini Vaishnaw over Bandra stampede

The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Sunday targeted Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, calling him “incapable”. This morning, at least nine people were injured, two of them seriously, in a stampede after they rushed to board a Gorakhpur-bound train at the Bandra terminus in Mumbai.

Speaking to “The BJP has made Ashwini Vaishnav ji, a prabhari of BJP Maharashtra for the elections, but every week incidents and accidents are happening with the railways. It is really a shame that our country has been forced by such incapable ministers,” he declared.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had also attacked Vaishnaw, saying he was too busy with the bullet train project while Mumbai passengers were being ignored. “Mumbai city gives maximum revenue to the Union government. Compared to it, we have hardly any facilities here for passengers,” he said while speaking to the media. “The Minister of Railways is too involved in the high-speed train project and people are dying because of the poor infrastructure because the Minister of Railways is out of touch with their problems.”

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Train project, aimed at significantly reducing travel time between the two cities, is currently under construction. The Railways Minister is always portrayed as highly educated and his association with prestigious institutes like IIT is highlighted, but he has failed to solve the problems of common people who depend on railways for their travel, Raut said.

“Mumbai city not only generates maximum revenue but is also home to the highest number of commuter passengers. However, the railway minister has not taken any steps to resolve the issues,” the Rajya member charged Sabha. Raut also criticized the NDA government at the Center over some of the railway accidents that occurred in the country during its tenure. “Since the start of the third term of this new Union government, at least 25 major rail accidents have taken place,” he said.

The incident took place when people rushed to board the Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express train 22921 on platform number 1 of the Bandra terminus. The Western Railway said the incident took place at 2.45 am on platform number one of the Bandra terminus, when the Antyodaya Express was “moving slowly” from the BDTS yard (Bandra terminus) towards the platform. “Meanwhile, some passengers on the platform attempted to board the moving train, causing an accident in which two passengers fell and were injured,” the Western Railway said.

The Western Railway said it is operating over 130 special trains to various destinations, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, in view of the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals.
