The US said the majority of driving instructors had carried out a DBS check.

Driving instructors in Guernsey who nominate students for practical tests must have passed an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check from next week.

The safeguard measure will be in force from November 18, the States of Guernsey said.

DBS checks are a way for employers to inspect a person’s criminal record.

The United States said the majority of instructors had already completed the check and a reminder had been sent to those who had not.

The move is part of the government’s work plan to comply with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

MP Lindsay de Sausmarez, Chair of the Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said: “We are reassured to know that those who look after our children and young people in other activities are under the care of people who carried out these checks.

“We should be able to offer the same level of assurance and peace of mind to those learning to drive.”
