How to turn off your Moto Razr or Moto Razr+

Turning off a phone completely saves battery power and can resolve performance issues. This could be a requirement in places like schools or hospitals. But turning off a phone isn’t as easy as it used to be. Holding down the power button may not work. This action launches the built-in digital assistant on the latest phones like the Moto Razr and Razr+.

How to turn off a Moto Razr or Razr+ when is it necessary? There are four ways to do this, and we’ve put them together in this step-by-step guide. Here’s how to turn off a Razr, whether you need to troubleshoot a problem or want to relax for the weekend.

This guide is based on the Moto Razr and Razr+ 2024 phones running Android 14.

Turn off the Moto Razr or Razr+ using the side buttons

By default, pressing and holding the physical power button on the Moto Razr or Razr+ does not display the Power Off menu. Instead, it activates Gemini or Google Assistant, whichever one you have configured. These assistants cannot turn off your phone.

You will access the power off screen with a different button combination:

  1. Press the Power And Increase volume buttons at the same time.

  2. Press Turn off on the screen that appears. The screen may look different depending on whether your Razr is closed (left image) or open (right image below).

This button combination works whether your Razr is open or closed. If you set up a lock screen, unlock the phone before it turns off. Press the Power button to turn the phone back on.

Phone batteries don’t like to stay fully charged or fully discharged for long. If you store your phone for more than a few days, make sure its battery is about 50% charged before turning it off. This minimizes battery degradation.

Turn off the Moto Razr or Razr+ with the Power button

Not everyone uses their phone’s built-in assistant or shortcut. You can change the behavior of the power button so that holding it down brings up the power off screen. To do this, go to Settings > Gestures > Press and hold power button and choose Power Menu.

This alternative way to turn off a Moto Razr doesn’t involve the side buttons. This is practical when they are not functional. The steps differ slightly depending on whether you are using the external or internal display of your Razr phone.

How to turn off a Moto Razr if it’s stuck or frozen (force restart)

If your Moto Razr becomes unresponsive, a force restart may be necessary. This may result in loss of unsaved data, but it is an effective solution for a frozen phone or stuck app. Maintain your physique power button to turn off and restart a frozen Moto Razr or Razr+. The phone turns off after about 10 seconds.

If problems persist, perform a factory reset on your phone. This removes all apps and restores your phone to factory settings. Otherwise, try Android recovery mode if your phone refuses to boot properly.

When should you turn off your phone?

Our phones are usually asleep, but they should or should be turned off in certain situations. Some locations may require visitors to turn off their phones, for example embassies, hospitals, sound recording studios or film sets. Turning off all mobile devices eliminates the risk of signals interfering with sensitive electronic equipment.

Being in areas with poor or no cell service can cause battery drain. Consider turning off your phone when traveling or turning on airplane mode to save battery power. It’s also necessary to turn off your phone if you’re mailing it, selling it, or sending it in for repair.

Troubleshoot issues with your Moto Razr or Razr+

A reboot or force restart is a way to troubleshoot technical issues or problems. If your phone is slower than usual or becomes jittery, turn it off and then turn it back on. It could also protect your phone from malware, according to the NSA Mobile Device Best Practices Guide.
