The satirical media outlet The Onion bought Infowars, the far-right conspiracy theory site, during its owner Alex Jones’ bankruptcy auction.

Jones was ordered to pay $1.5 billion to the families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims after calling the 2012 massacre a hoax.

The families of some victims agreed to forgo part of their payment to support The Onion’s candidacy, saying it wouldthe end of the disinformation machine» that Jones operated on.

Onion’s CEO told CNN that Infowars would continue “its long history of scaring site users with lies.”
