DJ Lagway’s status update

Brian Kelly and the No. 21 ranked LSU Tigers continue their preparation for a Week 12 Southeastern Conference showdown against the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon.

The storyline surrounding this weekend’s contest will be the status of Florida signal-caller DJ Lagway as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered in Week 10.

After missing last week’s game against the Texas Longhorns, Lagway is “going in the right direction,” according to Napier.

Now, the Southeastern Conference has released the initial Week 12 injury report with Lagway’s status updated once again.

A look at the full injury report for both programs with LSU expected to be without a starting offensive lineman again.

DJ Lagway: Florida quarterback

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway continues to recover from a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 10, when many thought his season could likely be over.

After initial reports came in positive, the Gators staff opted to sit Lagway last weekend against Texas in order to move in the right direction.

He then returned to the training grounds on Monday.

“We felt good about what we saw this morning,” Napier said Monday. “It’s daily and we expect him to practice today.”

Napier provided another update on Lagway’s status during the Southeastern Conference teleconference on Wednesday:

“DJ continues to improve,” Napier said. “I think we’ve seen progress every day and I think that’s allowed him to participate more in practice. Obviously we kind of control that environment, but in general I think we continue to move in the right direction.

Lagway was listed as “questionable” on the Southeastern Conference’s Week 12 injury report Wednesday night.

Now the Gators QB1 is no longer listed on the injury report, with Napier confirming that Lagway will be at full tilt Saturday afternoon against the LSU Tigers.

The Gators have battled the injury bug in 2024, with starting quarterback Graham Mertz suffering a torn ACL earlier in the season. Next, it was the five-star freshman from Lagway who hit the recovery table.

“I think he’s getting better every day. A little better with every opportunity,” Napier said Saturday. “I think he probably felt as good as he has since his injury today before the game. That’s kind of what he told me. But not quite ready. I think there was a risk in putting him out with a soft tissue injury. All indicators point to him not being quite ready to do so, but we’re hopeful. He has made some progress and we will have a good overview early next week.

Garrett Dellinger: LSU offensive lineman

LSU offensive lineman Garrett Dellinger injured his ankle during the Tigers’ Week 9 game against the Texas A&M Aggies.

Now, after rehabbing during Opening Day and missing Week 11 against the Crimson Tide, he’ll be back “OUT” for Saturday evening in Gainesville.

A player who has played in 41 career games with the Tigers, including 30 starts, all eyes will be on the experienced lineman’s return this weekend.

“He had a sprained ankle, so we’re hoping this week becomes a recovery week for him,” Brian Kelly said last Tuesday.

When Dellinger lost to Texas A&M, it was freshman Paul Mubenga who slid in at right guard.

LSU worked with an offensive line unit consisting of Will Campbell (LT), Dellinger (LG), DJ Chester (C), Miles Frazier (RG) and Emery Jones (RT) in 2024.

Tyree Adams’ “sixth man” appears to be out for the foreseeable future after undergoing surgery more than two weeks ago for a “sports hernia,” according to Kelly.

With Adams out and Dellinger’s status up in the air, it’s imperative that the veteran returns to the field as soon as possible.

“Look, he’s the starter, but one guy going down didn’t affect the running game to the level that it did,” Kelly said after the A&M game. “There are scraps and we have not won certain individual clashes. We made some mistakes, unusual from other guys on the offensive line, and frankly, we made choices to end up in boxes that weren’t conducive and we should have done something else. So it was a little bit of all those things.
