Google is testing removing news articles from searches in the EU, but it’s already backfiring

Below EU lawdigital platforms must pay for the reuse of information. But how much should Google pay for article previews? This is what Google is trying to find out through an experiment carried out in nine EU countries.

During the test, 1% of users will not see articles from EU-based news publishers in search and Google News, so Google can see its real impact on traffic. Or at least that was the plan. But the plan doesn’t seem well thought out given that it appears the news editors discovered the test in a blog post.

Just one day after Google made its project public, the Paris commercial court ruled an order saying he was breaking his existing agreement with the Competition Authority. Google could either abandon the test or pay €900,000 per day. The company decided to remove France from the list.

So we’re down to just eight countries for this 1% experiment – ​​for now…
