However, Muscat has now revealed he has his own doubts about where he will move. following before settling down China and the port of Shanghai.

He believes that doubts could have returned to him from the first drop in form, but he is more than satisfied with his decision to go to China.

Muscat said aleagues.com.au: “I had one or two private discussions with different parties towards the end of last season and in the discussions people from the clubs said: ‘Well, it really can’t work here and how do you know it can work here, your methods?

“When I finished those conversations, I was like you know what? Maybe this isn’t for me, because they haven’t followed me enough to really take the risk.

“It was just the opposite: ‘I want you to come here and do what you did in Shanghai. I want you to build it your way.’

“I’m really happy for these guys because it was a completely different conversation.

“I wasn’t trying to justify why it could work. I’m not going to try to justify my work.

“What that means is you don’t really believe it.

“At some point there’s going to be a bump in the road and you know what? It’s going to be the first thing that comes to mind.”

Muscat are aiming for the Chinese double and will meet Shandong Taishan next weekend in the Cup final.
