El Clasico: Spanish government investigates incident of racism against Lamine Yamal

The Spanish government, La Liga and Real Madrid reacted strongly on Sunday following racist insults directed at Barcelona players during Saturday’s match at the Santiago Bernabeu. Spanish media reported that Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal, 17, of Equatorial Guinean and Moroccan origin, had been the target of xenophobic and racist insults. Barcelona triumphed over their main rivals Real Madrid with a score of 4-0with Yamal among the scorers.

Spain’s Supreme Sports Council (CSD) has issued a statement condemning the racist incidents during the Clasico and is expected to meet on Monday to discuss the issue. The State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport, responsible for examining the case, includes the CSD, the Spanish Police, the Civil Guard, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), LaLiga and the State Attorney General’s Office.

“LaLiga will promptly report racist insults and gestures aimed at Barcelona players to the hate crimes section of the National Police Information Brigade, and will also inform the coordinating prosecutor of the hate crimes unit and the discrimination from the state attorney general’s office,” LaLiga said. .

The organization underlined its strong condemnation of the incidents at the Santiago Bernabeu and reiterated its commitment to eradicating all forms of racist behavior and hatred in and around the stadiums.

Real Madrid announced that they have opened an investigation to identify those responsible so that appropriate measures can be taken. “Real Madrid strongly condemns any racist, xenophobic or violent behavior in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults uttered by some supporters last night in one of the corners of the stadium,” the club said.

Barcelona has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment. Spain’s Minister of Migration and Inclusion, Elma Saiz, also denounced the incident, saying: “We will not allow attacks that we do not tolerate in other spaces to become normalized in sport.”

The RFEF and La Liga have implemented measures to deal with growing cases of racist abuse, including partial stadium closures. Earlier this month, four individuals were arrested and questioned in Spain on suspicion of orchestrating an online hate campaign encouraging fans to racially abuse Real Madrid’s Brazilian striker Vinicius Jr. as he approached of their match against Atletico Madrid. In June, the Valencia Court of First Instance handed down the first conviction for racist insults in a football stadium in Spain.
