Another Winter on China Hat Road: What the Homeless Are Doing to Prepare for the Cold and Snow

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Homeless people living in Bend are preparing as best they can as temperatures drop and snow accumulates in the mountains. Those who live along China Hat Road south of Bend are expecting another harsh winter and weather hazards are ever-present.

To stay warm, many use tarps and sleeping bags to insulate themselves. Area nonprofits provided blankets and heaters to some living on the streets, but the dangers of highly flammable materials and propane tanks caused devastating problems.

Last year, a a homeless woman died after being injured in a fire – she was using a heater in a makeshift shelter near China Hat Road.

Brooklyn, who lives near China Hat, said he lost all of his belongings in a tent fire five years ago.

Isabella Warren meets with Brooklyn and other area residents to find out how they’re preparing for a long, cold winter. His report will air tonight on NewsChannel 21 at Five.
