Florida officials prepare for special elections to replace Gaetz and Waltz

Florida officials will likely hold two special elections to replace two members of Congress and Gov. Ron DeSantis will name a successor to Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.

President-elect Donald Trump chose Rubio as secretary of state, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general and U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz as Trump’s national security adviser.

Rubio and Gaetz will require Senate approval. Gaetz has already resigned from his seat.

“Congratulations to the Floridians appointed to key positions in the Trump administration: Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Matt Gaetz, and Congressman Mike Waltz.” DeSantis said in a message on X. “I have directed Secretary of State Cord Byrd to immediately formulate and announce a timetable for the upcoming special election.”

Once this schedule is published, DeSantis, according to State Lawwill issue a command.

Rubio’s term ends in 2029, so DeSantis’ appointee will have plenty of time to learn the ropes in the Senate, raise money and prepare for possible re-election.

Trump’s daughter-in-law and Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump has been touted as a potential replacement for Rubio. She said Sean Hannity on his Fox News TV program Wednesday “If I am able to serve, I would like to serve the people of Florida.”

She is supported by Florida U.S. Senator Rick Scott. He posted on X“RT (retweet) if you think @LaraLeaTrump should be Florida’s next senator!”

Gaetz also approved his appointment by DeSantis on X.

Both Gaetz and Waltz come from safe Republican districts, making a Democratic turnaround very unlikely. Gaetz represents Northwest Florida’s 1st Congressional District and was re-elected with 66.04% of the vote. according to unofficial resultsand has been a staunch ally of Trump.

Waltz, the first former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier elected to Congress, won the Atlantic Coast’s 6th Congressional District with 66.54 percent of the vote.
