Petty politics appears to be the order of the day in the days remaining before the November 20 elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. The Congress cried foul after the delay of Modi’s flight at Jharkhand’s Deoghar airport also delayed the takeoff of Rahul’s helicopter and threw his campaign schedule into disarray. In Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar plotted against his now-former enemies – from his nephew Ajit to former aides who supported the NCP split – by selecting candidates in a “strategic” manner. The specter of Rohingyas in Jharkhand and the “vote for jihad” in Maharashtra also continued unabated. A new piety has also grown around Jharkhand’s tribal hero, Birsa Munda, as leaders flock to pay homage to him, with Bengal’s governor even declaring that Kolkata Raj Bhavan would celebrate the “Month of Birsa Munda”.
