Pedestrians say dark Tampa bridge puts lives at risk

TAMPA, Fla. — More than two months after Hurricane Helene, a series of storm-damaged streetlights are still out along a busy thoroughfare near downtown Tampa that’s popular with pedestrians.

“It makes absolutely no sense,” said Jamie Scarola, who lives on Harbor Island.

The affected lights line the Harbor Island Boulevard bridge between Harbor Island and the Tampa Convention Center.

According to several Harbor Island residents, the many street lights lost power during Hurricane Helene, but never came back on when power to the area was restored.

One of those residents wrote into the ABC Action News I-Team message box asking us to shed light on the literal darkness.

Stephanie Ko, who moved to the island in July, also noticed the outage.

“Crossing the bridge in the evening or at night, especially now that the sun is setting earlier, it is very dark,” she said.

Ko thinks someone could get hurt unless something is done to restore power to the lights.

“I like to walk where it’s well lit, and if not, I won’t,” she said.

So what do we do? ABC Action News has reached out to the city and is awaiting a response.

Meanwhile, a Harbor Island neighborhood leader forwarded emails to ABC Action News showing the city was aware of the problem and was trying to resolve it.

“We are very concerned about this significant outage and welcome urgent restoration of the Harbor Island Bridge,” a city engineer wrote in the email chain.

However, a week after sending the emails, the lights were still dim.

“The lighting guy told us it would be months before anything happened,” said Larry Premak, president of the South Neighborhood Association, which represents 657 homes on the south end of the ‘island.

Premak describes the ongoing outage as a “very, very dangerous situation” as the affected area experiences high levels of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on a daily basis. Many pedestrians crossing the dark bridge are visitors traveling between the Convention Center and nearby hotels and restaurants.
