Two DC youth football teams prepare for a national championship in Florida

Two Northeast D.C. youth soccer teams are chasing their dreams of winning a national championship, but they’ll need help to make those dreams a reality.

It’s already been a championship season for the Rosedale Tigers.

Their coach Chris Alston led their under 7 and under 8 teams to regional titles, while ensuring that learning and fun remained the priorities.

“It’s their safe space,” Alston said. “I let them run around and be kids.”

Now, teams have the chance to take it to the next level and win a national championship in a tournament that begins in December in Naples, Florida.

“It means a lot,” Alston said. “It shows that we are doing something right with the children and teaching them the right way to play football.”

Alston said this journey goes way beyond just football.

“Football is secondary,” he said. “It’s about brotherhood, staying together and being one.”

Now that the teams have done everything asked of them, they will need a financial boost to make the trip to Florida.

“Our program is independent,” Alston said. “Everything we do comes out of our own pocket. We need help with transportation and help with housing.”

“Without help, we would be stuck here in Washington,” he said.

The coaches implemented a GoFundMe to help them get two teams to the tournament and achieve their goals.

“Winning nationals and having fun,” running back and cornerback Legend Cook said of what matters most to him.

“The reason I love doing this trip is because it gives kids a chance to get out of Washington,” Alston said. “A lot of them don’t really travel, don’t go on vacation, don’t go anywhere. So it’s like a business trip and a vacation for all of them at once.”

“When I’m done with these kids and I get them into better schools, I know I’ve done my job,” Alston said.

He said the work was not yet done.
