Derek Falvey’s baseball assignment with the Minnesota Twins is rare

An advantage for Falvey is that he had the opportunity to see how the other person had done it earlier in their career.

“I saw Mark (Shapiro) personally in Cleveland take on that role during my tenure there,” said Falvey, who joined the Twins after the 2016 season. “He was obviously one of the first of his kind to time.”

Shapiro, a longtime member of Cleveland’s front office, moved from general manager to team president in 2010. Shapiro left Cleveland in 2015 to become team president and CEO of the Toronto Blue Jays. Tampa Bay’s Matthew Silverman, who served as team president for nearly a decade before running baseball operations, has experience in both roles, but it doesn’t appear he held them simultaneously .

It took unique circumstances to push one person to take on a dual role. Cleveland was comfortable moving Shapiro as team president because it wanted to give Chris Antonetti, now the Guardians’ president of baseball operations, a leading role within the organization. Silverman took over baseball operations for a few years when the Rays lost baseball’s best leader Andrew Friedman to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“It gave me, which people who ran baseball in other places around the game didn’t, a very deep understanding of the decisions that were being made within the company for a long time, and that has persisted over the years,” Falvey said. . “I’ve been involved in even more conversations about long-term planning, about what’s happening at this point, about investments throughout our system in Fort Myers and elsewhere.

“I don’t think if I had gone through a traditional baseball path on my own, I would even be in a position to be able to have this conversation. It’s because I’ve been talking with them for a long time.
