Martin Lewis informed a fan that it was “highly unlikely” that they would succeed in lowering their council tax band based on their circumstances. In his ITV Money Show this week he explained how to “verify and dispute”, with the possibility of getting a big discount and moving to a lower tax bracket.

One of his followers had already gotten a £19,000 refund after challenging his group. The episode prompted another fan to contact Mr Lewis, asking him checking neighbors, but what if all the apartments are in the wrong strip? What would we do in this situation?

To challenge your banding, Mr. Lewis emphasizes two crucial checks. The first is to compare your property with other similar properties in the area, which you can do for a house in England using the The government’s online tool – however, Mr Lewis warned the viewer that it would be “highly unlikely to be rebandaged in this case”.

If your property is in a higher band than similar properties nearby, then you need to calculate the value of your property when the band system was implemented, which was in 1991 for England . Money Saving Expert Website Features a tool which allows you to know the value of your property in 1991.

Many local councils also have schemes offering council tax reductions depending on individual circumstances. On his ITV show, Mr Lewis revealed the measures could save you up to £1,500 a year, with around 2.25 million people potentially missing out.

Those receiving means-tested benefits like Universal Credit or Pension Credit are often eligible for these reductions. To find out if your municipality offers such a program, visit its website.
