Paul Mescal breaks silence after Saoirse Ronan makes controversial joke on Graham Norton Show – Celebrities

Paul Mescal has finally responded to the viral moment Saoirse Ronan shut down a conversation about women’s safety on The Graham Norton Show.

It was at this point that the Irish actors were joined on the red sofa by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington that a joke about women and using phones as a defense tactic was tactfully stopped by Ronan.

The moment came after Redmayne opened up about his role as an assassin in the Sky Atlantic series. The Day of the Jackaland he described how he was taught to use a phone during an attack, by placing it under an attacker’s throat.

That’s when Mescal, 28, joked: “Who’s really going to think of that?” If someone attacked me, I’m not going to call them.

“That’s a very good point,” Redmayne said as they laughed and Graham Norton joined.

Ronan has tried to intervene several times before she was able to intervene and say, “This is what girls need to think about all the time.” Am I right ladies?

Now, Mescal has responded as Ronan was praised for her remark.

THE Gladiator actor was interviewed on the Irish channel RTE The late show if he was surprised by the answer.

He said: “No, I don’t think we were surprised, because, like you said, you’re on a talk show like this, and you’re just talking.

“But I’m not surprised that the post received as much attention as it did, because it’s extremely important and I’m sure you’ve had Saoirse on the show, like, she’s… quite often , more often than not, the smartest person in the room.

“But I think she… was right, hit the nail on the head, and it’s also good that… posts like that are gaining traction, like this is a conversation that we should definitely be having at daily.”

Thanks to this moment, Ronan had a platform to explain why she spoke out.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio United Kingdom, she answered the answer to the episode and said that “it wasn’t something she expected”.

She said: “The reaction has been wild. It’s certainly not something I expected, and I didn’t necessarily intend to cause a sensation.”

“But I think there’s something really telling about the society we live in right now and how women want to be open with the men in their lives.

“So many men and women I know around the world have contacted me about this comment, which, again, I urge people, please, please, s Please look at this in context.”

She then defended Redmayne and Mescal, explaining: “Please watch the whole interview or at least watch this part of the conversation because it wasn’t really about… the boys weren’t like to debunk everything I said.

“But at the same time, it was very similar to how I felt when I was having dinner with a group of my friends and I will always point out that, well, it’s actually an experience that we have every day, at 100%.”

Because she and Mescal worked together during the filming of the film, Enemy last year they are good friends.

She shared: “Paul being one of my very dear friends, I’ve had conversations like that with him before and he totally understands that and totally understands that, but I think the fact that ‘there was a moment like that that happened on a show like Graham Norton, which is something that the whole country broadcasts and you can watch and even abroad, it’s something something people listen to.

“There seems to have been an accessibility that seems to have really gained traction, which I think is amazing.

“It opens up a conversation and again, I hope it allows more and more women to just be like, well, yeah, actually, let’s talk about our experience.”
