GM to cut 1,000 hourly salaried jobs to cut costs: reports

Financial news

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – On Friday, General Motors Co. (GM) decided to lay off approximately 1,000 salaried and hourly employees in various divisions, mainly in North America, according to several media reports.

The move comes as the automaker aims to improve operational efficiency by controlling costs.

“In order to win in this competitive market, we must optimize for speed and excellence,” GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly confirmed in an email to Bloomberg.

“This means operating efficiently, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our key priorities as a business. As part of this ongoing effort, we have made a small number of team reductions.

Earlier this year, the company eliminated about 1,000 software engineers worldwide.

Currently, GM stock is down 1.04 percent to $57.02 on the New York Stock Exchange.
