Flint Neighborhoods Unite in Step-Up Pick-Up Contest

FLINT, Mich. (WNEM) – Six Flint neighborhoods volunteered their time and came together to participate in the Step-Up Pick-Up contest. Step-Up Pick-Up is an annual competition that aims to reduce waste and promote environmental sustainability.

“Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard to help pick up litter and congratulations to the competition winners! said Glenn Wilson, President and CEO of Communities First, Inc. “Our Step-Up Pick-Up program helps build and maintain our healthy and vibrant communities, and we thank our Flint neighbors for their dedication.

Communities First Inc. said in a news release that 63 volunteers collected 5,190 pounds of trash and contributed a total of 177 hours of volunteer service. The winning groups each received a cash prize to use to make their neighborhood cleaner and more welcoming. Additionally, individual Litter Champions were awarded to Flint residents for their commitment.

The winners of the Step-Up Pick-Up competition are:

    • 1st place: Mott Park Neighborhood Association
    • 2nd place: West Court Street Church of God
    • 3rd place: Reroot Flint
  • Most volunteers
    • West Court Street Church of God
  • Most of the measures taken
    • Mott Park Neighborhood Association

    • Nadaly Marchi
  • Impact of the event:
    • 5,190 pounds of waste collected (2.6 tons!)
    • 133,800 measurements taken
    • 63 volunteers participated
    • 177 hours of volunteer time in total
