Virginia Attorney General Expects ‘A Lot More Common Sense’ During Trump Presidency

Virginia’s Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares said he expects “a lot more common sense from Washington” with a Trump presidency ahead.

As President-elect Donald Trump visits the Oval in January, Miyares said he looks forward to the administration rolling back “the overly burdensome regulations that have affected so many Americans over the past four years.”

“Everything from OSHA’s vaccination mandate… to a pretty sweeping interpretation of Title IX to basically say that now biological boys are allowed to be on girls’ sports teams,” Miyares told Fox News Digital. “So I think you’re going to see a lot more common sense from Washington and the administration.”

Miyares said he expects many new developments with the new Republican administration, and “we look forward to seeing them.”

Following his victory, Trump and his team have already begun announcing various Cabinet appointments and their policy expectations. Among them was Trump’s announcement that he would nominate Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz to be the next attorney general.

Miyares did not directly comment on Gaetz as a potential Justice Department leader, but made clear that he also looked forward to working with the new AG.

“We will work with the attorney general,” Miyares said. “I know that’s why we have the Senate to advise us and give our consent.”

“But here’s what I would say: The new administration and the people it’s going to place in high leadership positions will, again, I think, be fundamentally different from the real left-wing ideology that we’ve seen pushed toward the down by the Biden administration,” Miyares continued.

Miyares recently made headlines after challenging a lower court’s ruling ordering the state to restore the names of about 1,600 potential noncitizens to its voter rolls ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

Miyares, along with Gov. Glenn Youngkin, remained steadfast after the Justice Department initially sued them over voter evictions, arguing that the state’s process was “individualized” and conducted in accordance with state laws. state and federal.

Miyares is up for re-election in 2025 but has not yet announced his official intention to run again. Two Democrats have already announced their intention to run for the position, including former Virginia Delegate Jay Jones and Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor. Both expressed their criticism of Gaetz’s appointment on social media.

“When I’m Virginia’s next attorney general, you better believe I’ll be taking Matt Gaetz’s excesses to court. We’re going to hold this administration accountable for Virginia families,” Jones wrote on X.

MATT GAETZ FACES GOP OPPOSITION IN SENATE AFTER TRUMP’S SELECTION FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

“Matt Gaetz, who was investigated by law enforcement for sex trafficking and investigated by the House Ethics Committee (a Republican-led committee in a Republican-majority House) has been nominated by President-elect Trump to be the next Attorney General of the United States,” Taylor wrote on X.

“I call on Attorney General Miyares @JasonMiyaresVA, our Commonwealth’s top legal official, to oppose this nomination and call on President-elect Trump to instead appoint an impeachable Attorney General, as opposed to a man himself -even subject to an ethical investigation.

Trump first announced his intention to nominate Gaetz for AG in an article in Truth Social on Wednesday, saying Gaetz “distinguished himself in Congress by focusing on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”

Republicans have already raised concerns about Gaetz’s potential nomination. He was previously the subject of a year-long Justice Department investigation following accusations that he had a sexual relationship with a minor, but the department ultimately did not file charges.
