The Wild Online World of Donald Trump’s Social Truth

There is some popular wisdom on the Internet regarding the dangers of attracting too much attention online. “Every day on Twitter, there is a main character,” says the maxim. “The goal is to never be.”

For much of Donald Trump’s first term as president, he continually occupied this main character spot. The world was glued to his Twitter profile, where cabinet members were impulsively fired and stock markets were shaken.

Then with a click, it disappeared. Trump was promptly kicked from Twitter for inciting violencethree days after the riots at the US Capitol in the final days of his presidency. As he left the White House, Trump also seemed to disappear from online life.

But in one corner of the web, Trump not only remained the main character, but also provided the entire supporting cast. In 2022, Trump launched Truth Social, a Twitter clone that he said would “resist the tyranny of big tech.”

Since his first post on the social network two and a half years ago, Trump has posted 24,000 times on Truth Social, an average of 25 times per day. It’s the first account suggested when signing up for the service, followed by a series of Make America Great Again figures and allies, from Tucker Carlson to Don Jr.

Although he was well received again on Twitter, now known as X, under Elon MuskOwned by Truth Social, Truth Social remains the most direct link to the mind of the president-elect. In the week following the election, he posted more than 66 times on the service, three times as many as on X.

His posts – known on Truth Social as Truths – range from official announcements and fan reposts to musings on sports and sharing memes. A post from the “il donaldo trumpo” meme account, showing an edited image of Trump riding a red wave, was reposted (or “ReTruthed”) by him three times.
