Japan unveils major plans to tackle pollution and overpopulation at Mount Fuji

Japanese authorities have taken significant steps to reduce pollution and overpopulation at Mount Fuji.

According to Reutersauthorities decided to offer a trackless, rubber-tired tram system made by Chinese company CRRC to transport climbers and to ban the entry of all private vehicles and tourist buses.

Yamanashi Prefecture, home to the most climbing routes on the 3,776-meter (12,388-foot) volcano, is expected to announce its plan soon.

The new proposal would replace the original plan to build a light rail system connecting the base to the fifth hiking station on the popular Yoshida Trail.

The change comes after concerns were raised by a local city and other parties about the environmental and financial impact of the light rail project.

Mount Fuji, which spans Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, is one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, with visitor numbers increasing in recent years.

The constant influx of tourist buses and cars to the fifth station, as well as overcrowded trails, have led to pollution and traffic jams, creating challenges for authorities in cleaning up the site.

According to the outlet, Yamanashi Prefecture plans to use locally produced hydrogen to power the tram.

This new mass transit system is expected to reduce the cost of the project by up to 40%, reducing the 140 billion yen ($895 million) originally planned for the rail system.
