Maple Leafs’ Ryan Reaves to be heard by Department of Player Safety for hitting Nurse Darnell

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves will have a hearing Sunday with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety over an illegal head check on Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.

Reaves was given a five-minute penalty for hitting Nurse during the second period of Saturday’s game, catching him with a shoulder to the head. Following Sunday’s hearing, Reaves will almost certainly face a lengthy suspension as the department takes his prior offenses into account. Reaves has already been suspended three times, with his most recent infraction occurring during the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Nurse remained on the ice for several minutes, before leaving the game with the help of teammate Mattias Janmark and a trainer. He was quickly ruled out of the game with an upper body injury.
