“I actually thought this horse had a chance” – outsider Stuzzikini gives Gordon Elliott his seventh winner at Troytown in the last 11 years

Gordon Elliott saddled nine in his attempt to win the Bar One Racing Troytown Chase for the seventh time in the last 11 years. Of his team, only the Gavin Brouder-mounted Stuzzikini made it to the frame, but he was also good enough to win, narrowly edging out ultra-brave runner-up Lucid Dreams.

When American Mike, the stable’s 5-2 favorite, floundered from the penultimate, the stable’s chances of adding to their roll of honor looked bleak, but Listowel rider Brouder , had managed to sufficiently fuel his mount and he found plenty of the last one.

Elliott said: “It’s great to win the race again. I actually thought this horse had a chance and I said so yesterday on TV. I thought he had a few pounds to spare because he’s a bit of a monkey.

“It’s unfortunate for Danny Gilligan who was supposed to ride him. He had to withdraw after a fall at home, but he will have plenty of horses to ride in the future.

“But it’s great for Gavin Brouder, who’s been a bit of a great backup for us in the past. He’s been lucky on almost everything he’s ridden for us. He’s ridden it exactly like us we told him; he gave him a lot of light and space to his fences.

“The horse was purchased by its owner Francis Foran for a modest sum. He has done charity runs and we use him for a little bit of everything. He’s a very fun horse.

The winner is the first horse owned by co-owner Foran from Kildare town. He said, “What a day! I almost fell leaving the stands. I just wanted a horse to have a little fun with and there’s no better man to have a horse with.

“I have to go back up to the stands to apologize because I think I jumped over five people, but the first person I met on the way down was Gordon’s assistant, Aidan O’Ryan, who I’m with went to school. It was an emotional moment.

Lucid Dreams trainer John Ryan said: “He was giving the winner a stone when you take the runner’s claim into account, and the weight probably gave it away.

“I thought Danny gave him a brilliant trip and we couldn’t have asked for much more of him. He has an invitation to run the Howden Silver Cup at Ascot before Christmas and that might tempt us.”
