Trump and Vance gather at Madison Square Garden; Harris campaigns in Philadelphia

During a podcast recording with conservative comedian Tim Dillon, Vance, visibly relaxed and speaking more freely than at public campaign events, made several incendiary comments about foreign policy and Harris.

Comparing the war in Ukraine to the potential conflict in Taiwan, Vance said Ukraine is not as important to the United States because it “makes a lot of the computer chips.” Asked by Dillon about the causes of the war in Ukraine, Vance asked – and answered – his own question: “Did American diplomacy actually create a conflict instead of diffusing it?” In my opinion, this is the case.

Later in the discussion, Vance also took aim at U.S. allies in Europe as Dillon questioned the United States’ relationship with NATO. “I mean, look, if I was a European country, in some ways I would feel pretty pathetic. …Because these guys don’t even have their own country anymore. They just do whatever the United States tells them to do,” he said.

He went more rhetorically in the interview than he often does in his public campaign appearances, and he made several remarks that run counter to the constructed “midwest nice guy” persona that is often can relate to who he portrays in most of his media appearances.

Vance often attacks Harris on the stump, but his comments with Dillon took a particularly gendered approach. From the start, Vance began mocking Harris for his laugh, describing it as awkward and inauthentic.

“I tried to put my finger on what was going on about Kamala Harris, like the very fraudulent laugh that I find so off-putting, and it’s like the laugh of someone who just made you feel really bad. comfortable,” Vance said.

Later in the conversation, Vance described Harris as unfun and generally unfriendly — although he noted that he had only met her in person once.

“There are too many things going on like school teachers. I just don’t know,” he said.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
