Kuwaiti women's right to housing strengthened by new amendments

Public authority for housing protection

KUWAIT CITY, November 18: In an important move to strengthen the rights of Kuwaiti women, the board of directors of the Public Authority for Housing Protection, chaired by Minister Abdul Latif Al-Mishari, has approved amendments to housing regulations. These changes aim to guarantee the rights of Kuwaiti women from the distribution of housing land to the completion of construction.

Sheikha Bibi Al-Yousef, head of the team responsible for women’s housing issues, stressed that the amendments prioritize the interests of female citizens. She told Al-Qabas: “The changes ensure that eligibility for housing alternatives does not remain affected by changes in family circumstances, such as marriage, divorce or death, after the draw. »

Al-Yousef explained that the revisions also ensure the inclusion of Kuwaiti women’s names on housing documents immediately after the draw, strengthening their legal rights. She stressed the need to continually review laws and regulations that do not guarantee justice for Kuwaiti women.

“The main objective is to provide a dignified and stable life for Kuwaiti women, especially those who are single, divorced or widowed without children,” Al-Yousef said. She added that ensuring rapid access to housing is her top priority.

To address public concerns, Al-Yousef announced biweekly meetings to hear complaints and suggestions from citizens. Dedicated communication channels, including a hotline and WhatsApp, have been set up to facilitate direct interaction with the housing authority.

In another development, Al-Yousef revealed that the Council of Ministers had last August ordered a collaboration between the Housing Authority, Kuwait Municipality, Fire Brigade, Ministry of Electricity and Ministry of Social Affairs to monitor violations. The first joint effort was to inspect the Sabah Al-Salem residential complex.

Reports from the municipality highlighted encroachments on state property, while firefighters identified security violations. Following these findings, the teams coordinated their efforts to stop the violations. Al-Yousef praised residents for their cooperation in resolving these issues and complying with regulations.

These measures reflect a continued commitment to safeguarding women’s right to housing and combating violations in order to maintain the integrity of Kuwait’s housing system.
