Creation of an eight-member local government reform commission

The government has formed an eight-member Local Government Reform Commission, headed by Professor Tofail Ahmed.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification to this effect yesterday (November 17).

The members of the committee are Professor Tofail Ahmed (Head), former Chairman of the Department of Public Administration, University of Chittagong; Professor Ferdous Arfina Osman, former Chairman of the Department of Public Administration, University of Dhaka; AMM Nasir Uddin, former secretary; lawyer Abdur Rahman, Supreme Court; Dr Mahfuz Kabir, Director of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS); Mashuda Khatun Shefali, executive director of Nari Uddug Kendra; Prof Dr Md Tariqul Islam, Professor, Department of Government and Politics, Jahangirnagar University; and a student representative.

The committee will begin its work soon and after taking the views of all relevant stakeholders, it will submit its report to the Chief Advisor Prof. Muhammad Yunus within 90 days, the notification said.

The head and members of the commission will obtain status, salary and benefit from social benefits determined by the government. But if one of them wishes to work voluntarily, without benefiting from social benefits, he must obtain authorization from the principal advisor.
