Is SEPTA on strike? Suburban and city unions still negotiating to maintain Philadelphia public transit

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — SEPTA tries to avoid two potential strikes.

Smart Local 1594, the union representing commuter transit workers, has already voted to authorize a walkout when his contract expires at midnight on Monday.

The Transportation Workers Union, which represents SEPTA municipal workers, is still trying to reach an agreement.

Service in parts of the suburbs could be hit as early as Tuesday if SEPTA workers go on strike.

The two sides took a break this weekend and are expected to meet again on Monday.

The potential strike could impact the Norristown High Speed Line and the majority of commuter bus lines, primarily in Delaware County. It could also affect two light rail lines in Delaware County.

Regional rail would not be affected.

Another union threatens to strike is Local 234 of the Transit Workers Union. It is the largest union representing SEPTA employees.

It includes more than 4,000 SEPTA city employees, including bus operators, mechanics and cleaning staff.

They have been working without a contract since November 8 and have authorized a strike but have not yet walked out.

If they go on strike, all of the city’s bus lines, trams and both metro lines will be closed.

It is not yet known when these municipal employees could strike.

Both unions are demanding commitments on safety and security. They also want higher salaries.

SEPTA says these are difficult issues to resolve because they are still working to cut spending in other areas.
