Containers transported by rail in a port at night

DP World’s initiative to boost the use of rail transport in the UK successfully reduced road congestion and carbon emissions in its first year, removing 64,300 lorry journeys and reducing more than 17,000 tonnes of CO2.

Launched in September 2023, the modal shift program aims to increase the use of rail transport for containers arriving at DP World Southampton, incentivizing customers to move their goods by rail rather than road.

Funded by a small tax on all incoming containers, the scheme increased rail freight at Southampton from 21% to more than 30%, with a target of reaching 40% by 2026.
