‘Babygirl’ Star Nicole Kidman Shares Why She Wakes Up ‘Crying and Panting’

Nicole Kidman has mortality on her mind.

The Oscar winner recently mourned the death of her mother Janelle, who died in September at the age of 84. The 57-year-old actress lost her father, Anthony, in 2014.

In a published interview on GQ On Monday, the actress admitted that her emotions are “even closer” to the surface as she considers her future.

“Mortality. Connection. Life comes and hits you,” the star described as something she feels more deeply than ever.

“And (the) loss of parents and raising children and getting married and everything that makes you a fully sentient human,” she admitted. “I’m in all those places. Such is life, phew. It’s definitely a journey.”

“And it hits you as you get older, how… it’s waking up at 3 a.m. crying and panting,” she continued. “If you’re in it and you don’t get numb. And I’m in it. Fully in it.”

When Kidman’s mother died, the “Babygirl” actress quickly left the Venice Film Festival and returned home to Australia.

Director Halina Reijn read a statement at the festival on Kidman’s behalf during what would have been her acceptance speech for best actress. Reijn, 48, noted that Kidman flew to Venice only to find out “shortly afterward that my beautiful and courageous mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed away.”

“I’m in shock and I have to go and be with my family, but this award is for them,” Reijn read. “She shaped me, she guided me, and she created me. I am beyond grateful to be able to speak her name to all of you through Halina. The Collision of Life and Art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.”

“…It hits you as you get older, how…it’s waking up at 3 a.m. crying and panting. If you’re in it and you don’t go numb. And I’m in it. Completely in it.”

Kidman also told GQ about how she was with her daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, who were 4 and 6 at the time, when her father died. The outlet described Kidman as “devastated and crying” at the time.

“The little one was so little she didn’t know if I was playing or not,” Kidman said of one of her children. She said, “Mommy is acting now? And the eldest said: “No, mother is not acting now.” But the oldest said to me: “Won’t you be sad tomorrow morning? Because they don’t want a house full of sadness. Who does it?”

Kidman said she had to overcome the pain be there for his family.

“…Before you know it, you’re going through it,” Kidman said. “And by standing up for them, you get better at it. Because it just keeps going. That natural flow of how it’s supposed to go. The parents, then you, then the kids. That’s the natural course. So if it goes product, it’s a blessing.”

The “Big Little Lies” star previously said it was her mother who encouraged her to pursue her acting dreams.

“She gave me the fire to pursue the career that I have because I always wanted to please her,” Kidman told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2020, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter.

“…She also forged her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to forge their own path,” Kidman said. “Mum didn’t necessarily have the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have equal opportunities.”

“It gave me life,” she reflects. “And she gave me my life, her and my father.”
