(CNN) — Charles Dumont, who composed at Edith Piaf His biggest hit, “Non, je ne regrette rien”, died at the age of 95.

Dumont’s wife told Agence France-Presse on Monday that he died overnight in Paris.

Born March 16, 1929 in Cahors, southern France, he died at home following a long illness, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported.

A trained trumpeter, Dumont’s career was unremarkable until he managed to convince Piaf to use “Non, je ne regrette rien” in the early 1960s.

He then composed nearly 40 songs for the singer, one of the biggest French stars of the 20th century, and also sang himself on several titles.

“My mother gave birth to me, but Édith Piaf gave birth to me,” Dumont said in an interview with AFP in 2015.

“Without her, I would never have done everything I did, neither as a composer nor as a singer,” he added.

Dumont has also worked with international musicians such as Barbara Streisand and the Italian-French singer Dalida.

His last performance dates back to 2019, according to BFMTV.
